Alaçatı
Çeşme, İzmir, Turkey
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: July
Alaçatı is on the Çeşme peninsula west of İzmir, on Turkey's Aegean coast. In summer a strong, steady northerly wind blows here most days, funnelled by the local terrain, and it has made the bay one of the best-known windsurf centres in the Mediterranean.
The bay is shallow with a sandy bottom, giving flat water near shore and chop further out. The shallow area is great for learning, but foilers should watch the depth until they are in deeper water. The main season runs from late spring to early autumn, peaking in July and August, when the wind is strongest and most consistent. The bay is well equipped, with many centres offering lessons, rental and rescue, and it can get very crowded in high season. The water warms up through the summer, though a thin wetsuit is still useful on windy days.
