Balatonfüred lies on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. The prevailing winds are northerly and northwesterly, blowing off the hills of the north shore, with lighter thermal breezes on calm summer days. The lake is long and very shallow, averaging only a few metres deep, so when the wind freshens it quickly builds a short, steep chop. Afternoon thunderstorms can arrive with sudden, violent squalls.
A storm warning system of flashing lights around the shore signals approaching strong winds, and sailors are expected to watch it and head for shelter when the faster flashing begins. Passenger ferries cross the lake in summer. Balatonfüred has several large marinas, yacht clubs and sailing schools, and the warm, shallow water suits learners and dinghy sailors as well as racing keelboats. The Kékszalag (Blue Ribbon), a round-the-lake race held each summer, starts and finishes here and is one of the oldest lake races in Europe.
