Bolonia is a quiet sandy bay on the Strait of Gibraltar, about 20 km west of Tarifa, inside the Strait Natural Park. The bay is backed by a large dune and the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, and it is far less developed than the beaches nearer Tarifa. It catches the same two winds as the rest of the Strait. The easterly Levante blows side-offshore and can be strong and gusty, while the westerly Poniente blows onshore to side-onshore and brings wind swell and waves for wave sailing and kiting.
The bottom is sand and the beach is wide, but there is little rescue cover and the offshore Levante can be dangerous, so it is a spot for independent intermediate and advanced riders. The season runs mainly from spring to autumn, with the most wind in summer. Because the bay is a protected area, kiting is limited to certain zones and periods; check local rules before riding. The beach is popular with swimmers in summer, so keep well clear of them. The water is often 17 to 20 °C.
