Cabarete is a beach town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The Caribbean trade winds blow from the east and northeast, usually building through the day and strongest in the afternoon. The windiest months are typically in the early part of the year and in the summer.
The bay is protected by a reef, giving chop on the inside and waves breaking on the reef outside. The outside waves are for experienced riders: the reef is shallow and the currents can be strong. The bottom is sand on the inside, with coral near the reef, so booties are recommended. The water is warm all year. Cabarete has many schools and rental centres along the beach. The beach can be busy, so follow local rules about riding zones and keep clear of swimmers near shore.
