Cape Hatteras – Canadian Hole

Avon, North Carolina, United States

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: January–April, November

Canadian Hole is a popular launch site on Pamlico Sound, on Hatteras Island in North Carolina's Outer Banks. The sound is a huge, shallow body of water between the barrier islands and the mainland, and the Atlantic beaches are only a short walk away.

The sound offers flat to choppy water, and much of it is waist-deep, which makes it excellent for learning. But shallow shoals and sandbars can catch a foil, so watch your depth. Southwesterly winds are common in late spring and summer, and northeasterlies in autumn and with passing weather systems. On the ocean side, there are waves and more exposed conditions for experienced riders. The best seasons are spring and autumn. Watch for thunderstorms in summer, which can bring sudden, strong wind shifts.
