Chia – Su Giudeu

Domus de Maria, Sardinia, Italy

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing, Surf foiling, Parawing

Best time to go: May–October

Chia is a string of sandy bays and dunes on the southern tip of Sardinia, south-west of Cagliari. Its orientation lets it work with several wind directions. The north-westerly Mistral reaches the south coast after crossing the island and blows from the land on some beaches, so riders pick the bay where it comes side-shore. South-easterly winds, often linked to the Scirocco, blow onshore and bring rideable waves, while summer days can also bring lighter thermal breezes.

The bottom is sand, with rocky points between the bays, and the water is very clear. On south-easterly days the waves and the coastline make it a good place for parawing wave riding and short downwind runs between the bays, staying clear of the rocky headlands. The spot suits intermediate and advanced riders, since the Mistral can be strong and gusty and offshore on parts of the coast. In July and August the beaches are busy and swimming zones are closed to wind sports, so use the marked corridors and check local rules with a school. Spring and autumn bring good wind with fewer people.
