Isla de Coche is a small, dry island in Nueva Esparta, Venezuela, between Margarita and the mainland, across the channel from El Yaque. Playa La Punta, at its west tip, is a 2 km beach of soft white sand without rocks, with a few beach hotels behind it. Kiters use the north part of the beach, near the Coche Paradise hotel, and windsurfers usually the south part.
The north-east to east trade wind, helped by a thermal, blows on most days and usually fills in around midday; it is steady and strongest from about February to June, and July is usually still good. Here the wind blows offshore to side-offshore, so there is no drifting back to the beach: beginners should only ride with a school or a rescue boat, and everyone should check that rescue cover is running before launching. The water is flat with some chop, shallow for the first metres and hardly affected by the tide, and it is warm all year, around 25 to 29 °C. Watch for boats and jet skis; in April the beach can be busy. Most riders come by boat from El Yaque or by ferry from Punta de Piedras on Margarita (the ferry runs irregularly). The nearest airport is Margarita's, near Porlamar, which also has the nearest full hospital. Check your government's current travel advice for Venezuela before you go.
