Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach, Florida (Space Coast), United States
Sports: Surfing, SUP
Best time to go: January–April, October–December
Cocoa Beach is on Florida's Space Coast, south of Cape Canaveral. The long, straight beach faces east, and shallow sandbars give soft, playful waves that suit longboards and beginners; the pier and a few spots to the south hold the best banks. Autumn hurricane swells and winter north-easters bring the biggest waves, and westerly winds blow offshore.
Most of the year the surf is small, so learning and longboarding are the main activities, with many surf schools along the beach. Watch for rip currents near the pier, jellyfish in some months, and lightning storms on summer afternoons. Water is warm much of the year, but a spring suit or light wetsuit is useful in winter.
