Coral Bay is a small holiday town on the Ningaloo coast of Western Australia, about 150 km south of Exmouth, where the Ningaloo Reef runs close to the beach and encloses a warm, shallow lagoon. The whole coast lies inside the Ningaloo Marine Park. Bills Bay, the main beach in front of the town, is kept for swimmers and snorkellers, and local riders report that kiting is not allowed there. Riders walk north past Skeleton Bay, a nursery for young reef sharks, launch on the beach beyond it and ride downwind towards Point Maud; on some days the beach between the bay and the boat ramp south of town is used too. There is no kite school, so read the signs on the beach and the marine park rules before you ride.
From about October to March a strong wind from the south to south-west, helped by the afternoon sea breeze, blows on most days, often at 15 to 20 knots or more; winter is less reliable. Inside the reef the water is mostly flat, with chop towards Point Maud. The lagoon is shallow, with coral and sharp rocks, so ride from mid to high tide, wear booties and keep well away from snorkellers and boats. Sharks are common on this coast. The water is warm, around 26 to 27 °C in late summer and 22 °C in winter. Coral Bay has a nursing post; the nearest hospital is in Exmouth, and the nearest airport is Learmonth, about 115 km away by road.
