Best time to go: April–October
Djerba is a low, flat island in the Gulf of Gabès in southern Tunisia, joined to the mainland by a causeway. Ras R'mel, the sandy peninsula north-east of the main town Houmt Souk, encloses wide, shallow waters with a sandy bottom, and other beaches around the island, such as the north-east coast near Midoun, are also used for kiting and windsurfing.
From spring to autumn a regular sea breeze from the northeast to east blows on most afternoons, often at a moderate strength that suits learning, freeriding and foiling. In the cooler months, northwesterly winds and passing fronts can bring stronger, gustier sessions. The water in the lagoon is flat and often only waist to chest deep over a long distance, making it one of the friendlier places in the Mediterranean to learn; keep an eye on depth with a foil. Look out for fishing gear and boats, and respect protected bird areas on the peninsula. Water is around 16 °C in spring and up to 28 °C in late summer.
