Holbox

Holbox, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: January–May, November–December

Holbox is a long, narrow island off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula in Quintana Roo, separated from the mainland by the Yalahau lagoon and part of the Yum Balam nature reserve. The north-facing main beach by the village and the area towards Punta Mosquito to the east are the main kite spots, with warm, shallow water over sand and sandbars that create flat-water areas close to shore. In winter, cold fronts called Nortes bring strong northerly winds, often onshore and gusty on the first day, and from about March to May steadier easterly winds blow side-shore, often helped by an afternoon thermal.

The shallow water and sandy bottom suit beginners in moderate winds, and intermediate and advanced riders enjoy freestyle and long downwinders along the coast. The island is car-free and the beaches are protected, with bird areas and seasonal wildlife, so ride only where allowed and check local rules. Watch for seaweed, shallow sandbars and boat traffic. The water is warm enough for board shorts most of the year.
