The Event Site in Hood River sits on the Columbia River, in the Columbia River Gorge between Oregon and Washington. In summer, a strong westerly wind blows up the gorge almost every afternoon, driven by the temperature difference between the cool coast and the hot interior.
The wind blows against the river current, which creates steep river swell and chop, ideal for bump-and-jump and downwind-style riding on foils. The shore is a mix of rock and sand, and the river is wide and deep, but currents are strong, so plan your return upwind. Watch out for commercial barge traffic, which cannot stop or turn quickly, and stay clear of the shipping channel. The water is cold, and a wetsuit is recommended. The main season runs from June to September. The Event Site has parking and facilities, and fees may apply.
