The best time to surf at Inamura Point is August–October, the known surf season, with water around 26°C.

Kamakura, Japan

Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: August–October

Inamura Point breaks below Inamuragasaki, the small rocky cape between Yuigahama and Shichirigahama in Kamakura, on the Shonan coast of Sagami Bay about 55 km south-west of central Tokyo. It is reached by Route 134 along the coast or by the Enoden train to Inamuragasaki Station, a short walk away. Parking is limited along the coast road and fills quickly when the waves are good, and there are surf shops, restaurants and a convenience store close by.

This is a surf spot. Waves break over a rock and sand reef in front of the cliffs. The left is the better known wave and runs back towards Shichirigahama; the right is shorter and less even. The waves come out of deep water and stand up fairly slowly, which makes the take-off easier than the size suggests, and mid to high tide is usually best.

The swell window is narrow, roughly south-south-east to south-west, and partly blocked by the Izu Islands, so the point only works on a good-sized swell. Most of the best days come from typhoon swells in late summer and autumn, usually August to October. Northerly winds (N, NE, NW) blow offshore here and are common in autumn and winter.

When it works the line-up is crowded and the regulars know it well, so it suits intermediate and advanced surfers who respect the local order. On big days there are strong currents and a heavy shore break over the reef, so be a confident swimmer and plan the way back in. Sagami Bay is mild: the water is coolest in late winter and warmest in late summer, so a full wetsuit is needed in winter and spring, while summer and early autumn need little or no wetsuit.
