Lefkada – Vassiliki
Vassiliki, Ionian Islands, Greece
Sports: Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, SUP
Best time to go: May–September
Vassiliki is a bay at the southern tip of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea, surrounded by mountains. In summer the prevailing north-westerly wind combines with a strong local thermal that is funnelled down the valley behind the bay, giving a reliable daily pattern: light winds in the morning and a stronger wind in the afternoon that builds towards the open sea. Locally the afternoon wind is often called Eric. The best months are June to September, with May and early October also usable.
The mornings and the inner bay suit beginners and improvers, while the afternoon wind and the chop further out suit intermediate and advanced sailors. The bottom is sand and pebbles. The bay is narrow and busy in high season, with several centres, boats and swimmers, so keep to the sailing areas and away from the harbour entrance. Kiting is generally not practised in the bay because of the space and local restrictions. The wind is gusty near the cliffs and can be stronger further out, so ask a local centre about safety cover.
