Lo Stagnone – Sicily

Marsala, Sicily (Trapani), Italy

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: April–October

Lo Stagnone is a lagoon of about 2,000 hectares between Marsala and Trapani on the western tip of Sicily, sheltered from the sea by the island of Isola Grande. The water is shallow almost everywhere, often knee- to waist-deep, over sand and seagrass, so it is one of the best places in Europe to learn and to practise freestyle on flat water. Northerly and north-westerly winds, including the Mistral, and southerly to south-easterly winds such as the Scirocco both work.

Many kite schools and centres line the shore near the salt pans, with marked launch areas and rescue boats. The lagoon is a nature reserve, so follow local rules about protected zones and the Phoenician island of Mozia. The water warms quickly in summer, and the main season runs from spring to autumn. On busy days the launch areas get crowded, and seagrass can be slippery underfoot.
