Kisakihama is a long sandy beach on the east coast of Kyushu, just south of Miyazaki city and close to the airport. It faces the open Pacific and is one of the most consistent and popular surf beaches in southern Japan, with many peaks along the shore and a strong local surf community. The sandbanks change with every storm, so the best peaks move along the beach.
Waves come all year, but the best season runs from about June to November, when typhoons and low-pressure systems in the Pacific send bigger swells; westerly and north-westerly winds blow offshore. Winter is cooler, with smaller swells and frequent offshore winds. It suits all levels on small days, while typhoon swells bring heavy closeouts and strong rip currents that are for experienced surfers only. The water ranges from about 16 °C in winter to 28 °C in late summer: a 4/3 mm wetsuit in winter, boardshorts in summer. Follow the beach rules, keep the line-up order and watch for rips near river mouths.
