Noosa – Noosa River
Noosaville, Queensland, Australia
Sports: Kitesurfing, Surfing, SUP
Best time to go: April–October
The Noosa River winds through Noosaville and Noosa Sound before reaching the sea beside Noosa Heads on the Sunshine Coast. Along Gympie Terrace in Noosaville the river is wide, shallow and sandy, with easy launching from the grassy foreshore. Water temperatures are mild all year, around 20 °C in winter and up to about 27 °C in summer. Mornings are usually calm; south-easterly trade winds or north-easterly sea breezes often build later in the day. Upstream, the river leads towards Lake Cooroibah, Lake Cootharaba and the quiet Noosa Everglades.
Near the river mouth the tidal current can be strong, especially on the outgoing tide, and boat traffic, ferries and moored boats are common along the river, so keep to the edges. For SUP surfing, the sheltered point breaks of Noosa Heads National Park, such as First Point, offer long, gentle waves when a swell wraps around the headland, but they are crowded and etiquette matters. The drier months from April to October bring the most settled weather. Sharks are present in the river and the sea, so avoid paddling at dusk or in murky water.
