Nosara – Playa Guiones

Nosara, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Sports: Surfing, Surf foiling

Best time to go: April–November

Playa Guiones is a long sandy beach at Nosara, on the Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste. The beach faces south-west, has no rocks or reef in the main area and is backed by forest, as building close to the shore is restricted.

The beach picks up almost any swell, which makes it one of the most consistent surf beaches in Costa Rica. South and south-west swells from about April to November bring the most size, while the dry season has smaller, cleaner waves. Mornings are often glassy or offshore from the north-east and east; afternoons tend to turn onshore. The many sandbar peaks suit beginners on the inside and intermediate surfers outside, and the mellow days suit foil surfing. On big swells it becomes powerful and rip currents form, so choose your spot carefully. The line-up is busy, especially near the main access paths. The water is warm all year, about 27–30°C, so boardshorts or a lycra are enough.
