Best time to go: April–September
Hale'iwa is the small town at the western end of Oahu's North Shore, and the break off Ali'i Beach Park sits next to the boat harbour. From about October to March the North Pacific sends large north-west and north swells onto the reefs along this coast. The trade winds blow from the east and north-east and are offshore to side-offshore here on most days, while lighter mornings are common in winter.
The wave is a right-hander over shallow reef, with a strong current that runs along the reef towards the harbour mouth on bigger days. The harbour is the main launch point for boats and jet skis, which makes Hale'iwa a natural base for tow foiling the open-ocean swells and outer reefs along the North Shore. Towing suits experienced riders with a capable driver and a safety plan. Expect crowds in winter, heavy boat traffic in the harbour entrance, big-wave days that close out the bay, and turtles and sharks in the area. Thrill-craft rules on Oahu are specific about zones and times, so check local rules before using a jet ski.
