Ollie's Point – Potrero Grande
Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: April–October
Ollie's Point is a right-hand point break at Potrero Grande, a remote bay on the Santa Elena Peninsula inside Santa Rosa National Park, in the far north-west of Guanacaste. There is no road access for visitors, so surfers come by boat, usually from Playas del Coco or the Tamarindo area.
The wave peels along a rocky point next to the mouth of the Potrero Grande river, over a mix of rock and sand, giving long, even walls. It needs a good south or south-west swell, so the best season runs from about April to October. The dry-season Papagayo winds blow offshore and keep the waves clean but can be very strong, and the boat trip is then rough. It suits intermediate and advanced surfers. Rocks line the point, the rivermouth may hold crocodiles, and there are no facilities or lifeguards, so go with an experienced boat crew. Boats arrive together on good days, so the line-up can be busy. The water is warm, about 27–30°C, but can cool to around 24°C during Papagayo upwelling.
