Pointe d'Esny
Mahébourg, Grand Port, Mauritius
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surf foiling, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: May–November
Pointe d'Esny is on the south-east coast of Mauritius, between Mahébourg and Blue Bay, a short drive from the international airport. The south-east trade wind blows here from roughly May to November and arrives side-onshore, steady and without obstacles, because the coast faces directly into it. A coral reef lies well offshore and encloses a wide lagoon, so most riding is on flat to lightly choppy water.
The lagoon bottom is mostly sand, with coral heads and seagrass in places, and it becomes very shallow at low tide, when foils can hit the bottom. It is a good place to learn to fly a parawing and to start foiling on the inside. Experienced riders can make downwind runs inside the lagoon or ride the waves breaking on the outer reef, but the reef passes have strong currents and the reef is sharp, so go only with local knowledge and never alone. Parts of the coast, including the Blue Bay marine park, have restrictions on wind sports, so check local rules with a school. Le Morne, the island's best-known spot, is on the opposite south-west corner.
