Punta Chame is a small fishing village at the end of a long, narrow sandy peninsula on the Pacific coast of Panama, about an hour's drive west of Panama City. During the dry season, from around December to April, the north to north-east trade winds blow across the isthmus and over the peninsula on most days, often reaching 15 to 25 knots. The main kite spot, La Punta, lies near the tip of the peninsula.
The water is mostly flat to choppy with a sandy bottom. Tides on this part of the Pacific coast are large: at low tide the beach is wide and there is plenty of space to launch and to learn, while at high tide the beach almost disappears and launching becomes tight. Tidal currents near the point can be strong, so avoid drifting past the tip and check the tide times before riding. Several schools and camps operate on the peninsula and offer lessons and rescue cover. Outside the windy season the wind is much less reliable.
