Rhosneigr

Rhosneigr, Wales (Anglesey), United Kingdom

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing, Parawing, SUP

Best time to go: March–May, September–November

Rhosneigr is a small village on the west coast of Anglesey in north Wales, between two sandy beaches: Traeth Llydan (Broad Beach) to the south and Traeth Crigyll to the north. The coast faces south-west into the Irish Sea, catching the prevailing south-westerly winds and swell, which makes it one of the best-known places in Wales for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with surf on the right swell. South-westerly and westerly winds blow onshore to side-onshore and bring waves for experienced riders, while southerly winds give cross-shore conditions.

The beaches are sandy, but rocks and reefs show at low tide, and the tidal range is large, so plan sessions around the tide. Smaller, lighter days and the inner areas suit learners, and there are schools in the village. Spring and autumn usually bring the strongest winds, with summer lighter and busier. Currents can be strong around the headlands, and the water is cold outside summer. RAF Valley is nearby, so check local rules on restricted areas and keep clear of swimmers.
