Rincón

Rincón, West Coast (Rincón), Puerto Rico

Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: January–March, November–December

Rincón is a small town on the north-west corner of Puerto Rico, facing the Mona Passage. Its coastline has a long chain of reef and point breaks, including Domes, Maria's, Sandy Beach and the big-wave reef of Tres Palmas, and it became famous after hosting the world surfing championships in 1968.

The season is the northern winter, from about November to March, when north and north-west swells from Atlantic storms wrap into the coast. The east and south-east trade winds blow offshore along much of this shore, so mornings and many afternoons are clean. The waves break over reef, rock and some sand, from friendly walls on small days to powerful waves when the swell is big; Tres Palmas is only for very experienced surfers. Currents can be strong, and urchins and sharp reef are common, so booties are useful. Popular breaks are crowded in peak season. In summer the coast is usually flat. The water is warm all year, around 26 to 28 °C.
