Sanur, Bali, Indonesia
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Surfing, SUP
Best time to go: July
Sanur is on the south-east coast of Bali, a short drive from Denpasar and the airport. During the dry season, from around June to September, the south-east trade wind blows across the island on most days, typically building through the morning. The kite schools are on the beaches at the southern end of Sanur, where the wind blows side-onshore along the coast.
An offshore reef protects a shallow lagoon with flat to lightly choppy water inside, while waves break along the outer reef for experienced riders. The bottom is sand and seagrass close in and coral further out, and the tide decides everything: at low tide the lagoon becomes too shallow to ride, so plan sessions for mid to high tide and wear booties. Strong currents run through the reef passes. Sanur is also busy with swimmers, fishing boats, snorkellers and boats heading to the outer islands, so keep to the areas used by the schools and avoid the boat channels. Beginners should learn only with a school.
