Sauble Beach
Sauble Beach, Ontario, Canada
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Surfing
Best time to go: May–June, September–November
Sauble Beach is a long sandy beach on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, about three hours north-west of Toronto. The beach runs for several kilometres with a wide, gently shelving sandy bottom.
The beach faces west, so the south-westerly, westerly and north-westerly winds that come with weather systems blow onshore or cross-onshore. Spring and autumn are the windiest seasons; summer has more light days and thermal breezes. Strong autumn and early winter storms build steep, short-period lake waves that surfers use, with offshore easterly winds cleaning them up as the wind turns. The shallow sandy bottom makes it suitable for learning in moderate winds, while storm days suit experienced riders. In summer the beach is very busy with swimmers, so riding is easiest early or late in the season and at the less crowded access points; check local rules about launching. The water is cold for much of the year: a 4/3 wetsuit in spring and autumn and a 5 mm suit with boots and gloves in late autumn.
