Baja – Scorpion Bay
San Juanico, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Sports: Surfing, Surf foiling, SUP
Best time to go: June–October
Scorpion Bay is the surfers' name for the bay at San Juanico, a small village on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, far from the main highway. Several right-hand points line the bay, numbered from the inside outwards; the outer points pick up more swell, while the inside points stay smaller and gentler.
The points work on south and south-west swells, which arrive mostly from June to October, including swells from tropical storms to the south. On a good swell the sections can link into very long rides, which makes the bay popular with longboarders, SUP surfers and surf foilers. Northerly and north-easterly winds are offshore; the north-westerly winds of spring and early summer are partly blocked by the headlands. The bottom is sand and cobbles. The inside point suits beginners on small days, and the outer points suit intermediate and advanced surfers. The area is remote, with limited services and medical care. The water is warm in late summer but cooler in spring, when a 3/2 wetsuit is useful.
