Silver Rock and Silver Sands are neighbouring beaches near the southern tip of Barbados, in Christ Church, about ten minutes by car from Grantley Adams airport. This is the island's best-known kite and windsurf spot, with a long windsurfing tradition, and on windy days kites now often outnumber sails.
The east trade wind blows from about December to June, often into July, usually at 15 to 25 knots, and comes in cross-onshore from the left. On the inside it builds chop and small kickers for jumping; further out, waves break on the reef. The waves are best from December to February, when swells reach the south coast. The beach is sand, but the reef is shallow in places and more so at low tide, while the shore break is strongest around high tide. With the reef, waves and crowds, the spot suits intermediate and advanced riders; beginners are better off with a school, or at Long Beach a little further east on days with more north in the wind. The water is warm all year, around 27 to 30 °C: board shorts or a rash vest, and plenty of sunscreen.
