Softades Beach lies on the south coast of Cyprus between Kiti and Mazotos, about a 15-minute drive from Larnaca. It is the only government-licensed kitesurfing beach and sea area in the Republic of Cyprus, so this is where the island's kite schools are based: Kahuna Surfhouse, KiteMed, Wind Bandit Kiteshack and Kiteflex all teach here, with their facilities on the beach. The beach is wide and sandy, partly pebbly.
From May to October a steady thermal wind blows side-on along the beach on most days, typically 15 to 25 knots and often lasting until late in the evening; easterly winds also work. In winter the wind is more changeable, and the schools ride all year when conditions allow. Near the shore the water is shallow and usually calm, with no strong currents, which suits beginners, while experienced riders use the open water for freestyle, big air and racing; summer competitions are held here.
Kitesurfing in Cyprus is limited to this licensed area, so don't kite at nearby beaches such as Mazotos, where the police can intervene. Keep clear of swimmers and follow the schools' rules for launching and landing on a busy summer beach. There are no rocks or corals in the water. The water is about 18 °C in February and 29 °C in August: no wetsuit is needed in summer, a 3/2 in winter.
