Sotavento – Fuerteventura

Costa Calma, Canary Islands, Spain

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing

Best time to go: June–July

Sotavento is a long stretch of beach on the southeast coast of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands, between Costa Calma and Risco del Paso. In summer, the northeast trade winds blow strongly and reliably here, funnelled over the island, and they arrive side-offshore along the beach.

At high tide, a large, shallow lagoon forms behind a sandbar, giving flat water that is excellent for learning, freeriding and speed. At low tide the lagoon drains and the beach becomes very wide, so plan sessions around the tide. On the sea side there is chop and some swell. Because the wind is side-offshore, there is a real risk of being blown out to sea, so ride within your limits, stay close to shore and use the rescue services offered by the local centres. The wind can be gusty on the strongest days. The water is fresh, so a thin wetsuit is useful. The main season runs from June to September.
