Squamish Spit

Squamish, British Columbia, Canada

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing

Best time to go: May–September

The Squamish Spit is at the head of Howe Sound, north of Vancouver, British Columbia. In summer, a strong thermal wind blows up the sound from the south most afternoons, driven by the temperature difference between the ocean and the warm inland valleys.

The water is very cold because it is fed by glacial rivers, so a thick wetsuit, boots and gloves are needed. The currents where the river meets the sound can be strong, and the shore is rocky. Conditions are best suited to experienced riders. Access to the Spit has been managed by a local society, with fees and rules, and the arrangement may have changed, so verify the current access situation before going. The main season runs from about May to September.
