Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: January–July, September–December
Taghazout is a fishing village on the Atlantic coast north of Agadir, in south-western Morocco. The coastline here runs roughly north to south with a series of rocky headlands, so north-west swells from North Atlantic storms wrap around them and form long right-hand point breaks, including well-known spots such as Anchor Point and Killer Point just north of the village. Easterly and north-easterly winds blow offshore, and the main season runs from about October to March.
The area suits all levels: the larger points over rock and reef are for experienced surfers, while sandier beach breaks and smaller spots nearby are used by surf schools and beginners. Entry and exit at the points are over rocks, which can be sharp and slippery, so booties are useful. Sea urchins are common on the rocky bottoms. The water stays fairly mild, with a spring suit or light full wetsuit usually enough. The popular points get crowded in winter, so be patient and respect the local surfers.
