Trestles is a group of breaks inside San Onofre State Beach, named after the railway bridge over San Mateo Creek. Cobblestones pushed out by the creek form the reefs. Lower Trestles is a high-performance A-frame with a long right and a shorter left, while Upper Trestles, Middles and Church offer other options. South and south-west swells in summer and early autumn are best, and light north-easterly morning winds blow offshore.
Access is by a walk or bike ride of about 2 km from the car parks, through a nature reserve. The line-up is crowded with skilled surfers and some professionals, so it suits confident intermediate and advanced surfers. The bottom is rocky, and the inside can be shallow at low tide. Water quality can drop after rain.
