Unstad

Leknes, Nordland (Lofoten), Norway

Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: January–April, September–December

Unstad is a small bay on the north-western side of Vestvågøy in the Lofoten Islands, well above the Arctic Circle, reached by a road through a tunnel. Steep mountains frame a sandy beach with a left-hand and a right-hand point break over rocks and boulders at either side, which can produce long, quality waves. It faces the Norwegian Sea and picks up west and north-west swell, with easterly winds blowing offshore. It is known as one of the northernmost surf spots in the world.

The best waves usually come from autumn to spring, when Atlantic storms pass; summer is often small and gentler, which suits learners on the beach, and the midnight sun allows long sessions. In mid-winter daylight is very short. The water is very cold all year, so a thick hooded wetsuit, boots and gloves are needed. Rocks, rips and changeable weather are the main hazards, and the line-up can be crowded in good conditions. The area is remote, so respect the small community and park only where allowed.
