Aruba – Hadicurari

Noord, Noord, Aruba

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, SUP

Best time to go: May–July

Hadicurari, better known as Fisherman's Huts or simply the Huts, lies at the northern end of Palm Beach on the north-west tip of Aruba, just past the high-rise hotels. The island sits in the path of the Caribbean trade winds, which blow from the east to north-east for most of the year and are usually strongest and most reliable from around May to August. Because of the shape of the coast the wind blows side-shore here rather than offshore, as it does on much of the west coast.

The water is warm and mostly flat to lightly choppy close in, with a sandy bottom and some rocky and weedy patches, so booties are useful. The beach is shared with windsurfers and swimmers, and kiting is organised into a kite zone with launching areas, so ask a local school about the current layout and stay clear of the swimming areas and the hotel beaches to the south. Lessons and rescue cover are available, which makes it workable for beginners as well as experienced riders. On strong days the wind can get gusty near the shore, and drifting downwind takes you towards open water, so ride within your limits.
