Bonaire – Lac Bay
Kralendijk, Caribbean Netherlands, Bonaire
Sports: Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, SUP
Best time to go: May–July
Lac Bay is a large shallow bay on the south-east coast of Bonaire in the southern Caribbean, enclosed by a coral reef that breaks the open-ocean swell. The easterly trade winds blow side-onshore across the bay for most of the year and are most reliable from about January to August, with a quieter period in autumn. The warm, flat to lightly choppy water and the shallow, sandy bottom have made the bay a famous place to learn and a training ground for many top freestyle sailors.
Most activity is around Sorobon beach, where launching is easy and you can stand in large parts of the bay. The bay is a protected nature area with seagrass and mangroves, so stay within the sailing areas and away from the mangroves. Outside the reef the open ocean is rough with strong currents, and sailing beyond it is not advisable. Kitesurfing is not permitted in Lac Bay; kiters use Atlantis beach on the south-west coast. The spot suits all levels.
