Bali – Balangan
Jimbaran, Bali, Indonesia
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: May–September
Balangan is a sandy beach below the cliffs on the north-west side of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, a short way north of Dreamland. The main wave is a long, fast left-hander that breaks over a flat coral reef, with sections that can link up for a long ride on a good south-west swell. It needs a little more size than the more exposed breaks further south, and during the dry season, roughly May to September, the south-east trade winds blow offshore.
On small to medium swells the wave is fun and suits confident intermediates; when the swell is big it becomes fast and powerful and is best left to experienced surfers. The reef is shallow, especially at low tide, when the wave can break almost on dry reef, so most surfers go out from mid to high tide. The beach is open and easy to reach, and the line-up is busy in the dry season, though usually less hectic than Uluwatu. The water is warm all year, about 26–28 °C, so boardshorts or a rash vest are enough.
