Bali – Bingin

Pecatu, Bali, Indonesia

Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: May–September

Bingin is a cliff-backed beach on the west side of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, between Dreamland and Padang Padang, reached by a long flight of steps through the houses on the cliff. The main wave is a short, perfectly shaped left-hander that breaks over a flat coral reef, often hollow from take-off to the end of the ride. It works on south-west swells, and during the dry season, roughly May to September, the south-east trade winds blow offshore, with the best conditions in the morning.

The wave is short and the take-off zone is small, so the line-up gets crowded quickly and positioning matters. Smaller days suit competent intermediates; bigger swells make it fast and heavy, for experienced surfers. The reef is shallow and sharp, especially as the tide drops, so check the tide before paddling out and take care getting in and out over the reef. The water is warm all year, about 26–28 °C, so boardshorts or a rash vest are enough, and reef booties help at low tide.
