Foxton Beach

Foxton Beach, Manawatū-Whanganui, New Zealand

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing

Best time to go: October

Foxton Beach is a small settlement at the mouth of the Manawatū River on the west coast of the lower North Island. The coast here is exposed to the strong north-westerly and westerly winds that funnel towards Cook Strait, making it one of the windiest kite spots in the region. The open beach gives waves and chop for wave riding, while the estuary inside the river bar offers flatter water on the right tide.

The beach is wide and sandy, and vehicles are allowed on parts of it. Currents at the river mouth are strong, especially on the outgoing tide, so stay clear of the channel. The estuary is an important bird habitat with protected areas. Facilities in the village are limited.
