Plimmerton
Plimmerton, Wellington (Porirua), New Zealand
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: September–October
Plimmerton is a seaside village north of Porirua, about 25 minutes from central Wellington. The beach faces west towards Mana Island, and Wellington's strong northerly and north-westerly winds blow cross-offshore to cross-shore here, often at 20–30 knots, with southerlies another option. It is one of the most used kitesurfing and windsurfing spots in the Wellington region.
The wind can be gusty because it comes over the land, and offshore components mean riders must be able to stay upwind. Rocky platforms line parts of the shore, so launch from the sandy areas and watch the tide. The village has a café and parking along the domain. Mana Island is a nature reserve.
