Jupiter – Florida

Jupiter, Florida, United States

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Surfing

Best time to go: January–April, October–December

Jupiter lies on Florida's south-east Atlantic coast in Palm Beach County, where the Jupiter Inlet meets the ocean. The beaches south of the inlet, including Jupiter Beach Park and Juno Beach further south, are used by kiters, wingers and surfers.

The main season is from about October to April, when cold fronts and the north-east to south-east trade winds bring regular wind; north-easterlies blow onshore with waves, while east and south-east winds are side-onshore. In summer the wind is lighter and afternoon thunderstorms are common. For surfing, north and east swells from autumn storms and winter fronts produce beach-break peaks and waves by the inlet jetty, cleanest with westerly offshore winds. The bottom is mostly sand, with rocks and limestone reef in places and the jetty near the inlet, where currents are strong. Lifeguarded beaches and swimming areas may restrict kiting, so check local rules. Watch for sea turtle nesting areas in the dunes in season. The water is warm most of the year; a 2 mm wetsuit helps after winter fronts.
