Midigama
Midigama, Southern Province, Sri Lanka
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: January–April, November–December
Midigama is a village on the south coast of Sri Lanka, between Ahangama and Weligama, where the coast road runs past a string of reef breaks. Lazy Left is a mellow left over a flat reef that suits improving surfers, Lazy Right is a short wave nearby, and Ram's Right is a fast, hollow right over shallow reef and rock for experienced surfers only. Coconut Point and other reefs lie a short walk away.
The season runs from about November to April, when the north-east monsoon blows offshore and south-west swells from the Indian Ocean reach the coast. Mornings are usually the cleanest. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings onshore winds and rough seas. The water is warm all year, about 27–29 °C, so boardshorts or a rash vest are enough. The reefs are shallow, with sea urchins in places, so booties help and lower tides need care. The best-known waves get crowded in peak season, so share the peaks and respect local surfers.
