Best time to go: May–September
Weligama is a fishing and surf town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, about 30 kilometres east of Galle. Its broad, crescent-shaped bay is protected from much of the Indian Ocean swell, so waves arrive small and soft and break over a sandy bottom. This makes it one of the most popular places in the country for learning, and on most days the long, gentle walls also suit longboards and prone foils.
The main season runs from November to April, when the north-east monsoon brings offshore winds and fairly clean conditions on the south coast. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings onshore winds, rain and messier seas. The beach is lined with surf schools and the line-up can be very crowded with beginners, so foilers should ride away from the busiest area or at quieter times and keep clear of swimmers; check local rules. Watch for fishing boats and lines in the bay, occasional rip currents and strong sun. The water is warm all year.
