Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Surfing, Surf foiling, Tow foiling
Best time to go: April–October
Namotu is a tiny island on the outer barrier reef of the Mamanuca Islands, off the west coast of Viti Levu in Fiji, a boat ride from the Nadi area and close to Tavarua and Cloudbreak. Several reef breaks surround it, including Namotu Left, the right-hander at Swimming Pools and the long walls of Wilkes Pass.
The dry season, from about April to October, brings the most consistent south and south-west swells and the south-east trade winds. On windy days the reef passes and the lagoon in the lee of the island are used for kiting, winging and foiling, from flat water inside to wave riding on the reef. The open-ocean swells outside the reef are also used by tow and surf foilers. All the breaks are over shallow, sharp coral, and several are best at mid to high tide, so it suits intermediate and advanced riders. Access is by boat and depends on local arrangements, which can change, so check before you go. The water is warm all year, around 25 to 28 °C; a lycra and booties are useful.
