Tavarua – Cloudbreak
Nadi, Mamanuca Islands, Fiji
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Surfing, Surf foiling, Tow foiling
Best time to go: April–October
Cloudbreak is an outer reef in the Mamanuca Islands, a boat ride from the mainland near Nadi and close to the small island of Tavarua. It faces open ocean to the south-west, so it picks up every south and south-west swell from the Southern Ocean. The south-east trade winds blow offshore here, and calmer mornings are common in the dry season from about April to October, which is also when the swell is most consistent.
The wave is a long, powerful left over a coral reef with several sections that link up on bigger days. There is no beach access: everyone arrives by boat. When the swell is large, tow crews use jet skis to catch the outer waves, and tow foilers ride the long open-ocean swells outside the reef, where there is room to link bumps. It suits experienced big-wave riders with a reliable driver and safety plan. Expect a busy line-up on good days, sharp shallow reef on the inside and strong currents. Arrangements for boat access and jet ski use can change, so check local rules and arrangements before you go.
