Papamoa
Pāpāmoa, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Surfing, Parawing, SUP
Best time to go: January–April, October–December
Pāpāmoa Beach runs for kilometres along the Bay of Plenty east of Mount Maunganui, a straight, sandy coast facing north-east. Summer sea breezes from the north-east and east, as well as stronger fronts, blow cross-shore to cross-onshore here, and with so much empty beach it is one of the region's main kitesurfing and winging areas. Swells from the north and east bring surf to the sandbars.
The beach is backed by dunes and suburbs, with access points every few hundred metres and a patrolled area at Pāpāmoa Surf Club in summer. Rips form between the sandbars on bigger days. Tauranga's Kulim Park, on the harbour side, is the flat-water alternative nearby.
