Phan Rang

Phan Rang, Khánh Hòa, Vietnam

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling, Windsurfing, Parawing

Best time to go: January–March, November–December

Phan Rang lies on Vietnam's south-central coast, in the former Ninh Thuận province now part of Khánh Hòa, about two hours north of Mui Ne. The main kite area is My Hoa lagoon, a wide stretch of shallow water protected by an outer reef about a kilometre offshore. Ninh Chu bay, closer to the town, is a second option. During the north-east monsoon, from about November to March, the wind blows from the north to north-east on most days, often between 15 and 30 knots and sometimes stronger.

Inside the reef the water is flat to lightly choppy over sand, which makes the lagoon good for learning, freestyle and foiling. Beyond the reef there are waves for experienced riders. The water is warm and a shorty or no wetsuit is enough. The lagoon is shallow in places, so falls at speed can be hard, and on the strongest days a small kite is needed. The area has become popular, so expect busy water in peak season and keep clear of lessons. From April to October the wind is much lighter and less regular.
