Best time to kitesurf Punta Trettu

The best time to kitesurf at Punta Trettu is May–September, the well-known local wind season, with water around 24°C.

San Giovanni Suergiu, Sardinia, Italy

Sports: Kitesurfing, Wingfoiling

Best time to go: May–September

Punta Trettu is a small point on the lagoon between the mainland of south-west Sardinia and the island of Sant'Antioco, near the village of Matzaccara in the municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu. Cagliari and its airport are about 70 to 85 km away, a little over an hour by car towards Carbonia. You park at the Punta Trettu car park and walk about ten minutes to the kite beach, so a trolley helps with the gear.

The lagoon is almost closed off from the open sea, so the water is flat, and over a sandy bottom it stays shallow enough to stand for hundreds of metres. That makes it one of the best-known places in Italy to learn, and freestyle riders like the flat water too. The main wind is the north-west Mistral (maestrale), steady and often stronger than forecast, and in summer a thermal blows on most days, usually at 15 to 25 knots. South-east (scirocco) winds coming through the Sant'Antioco channel also work when they are strong, as do strong east, west and south-west winds. The season runs from about April to October, with June to August the most reliable months.

Launching is only allowed from the kite beach. The lagoon is split into a school zone with the shallowest water and a riders' zone for those who can already ride upwind; keep out of the boat channel to Sant'Antioco harbour and away from fishing nets, and follow the buoys, as the police and coast guard give fines. Several schools work on the beach, with rental, rescue boats, a bar, showers and toilets. The water is about 14 to 15 °C in late winter and 27 °C in August: a shorty is enough in summer, a full wetsuit from October to May. The nearest hospital is in Carbonia.
