Safi
Safi, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco
Sports: Surfing
Best time to go: January–April, October–December
Safi's famous wave, often called Le Jardin or Safi Garden, is a right-hand point break on the Atlantic coast just north of the industrial port city of Safi. It needs a solid west-northwest to northwest groundswell to come alive, so it is fickle and often flat in summer. When a big winter swell lines up, it produces long, fast and hollow walls that rank among the best right-handers in Morocco.
The wave breaks over a rock and reef shelf with slabby sections, and the take-off is steep, so it is a spot for experienced surfers only. Offshore winds from the east and northeast groom the point; the afternoon northerly can blow it out. Currents along the point are strong when it is big, and getting in and out over the rocks needs care. The main season runs from November to March. The water is cool, around 16–18 °C in winter, so a 4/3 mm wetsuit is the norm. Respect the local crowd and the line-up order.
