Sports: Surfing

Best time to go: June–August

Yallingup is a small coastal village at the northern end of the Margaret River region in south-western Western Australia, about 260 kilometres south of Perth. Its main break sits in front of the beach, where Indian Ocean swells from the south-west hit a limestone reef and break as a right and a shorter left. A sheltered lagoon behind a reef at the southern end is popular for swimming but is not a surf spot.

The swell is most consistent from autumn to spring, roughly March to October. Easterly and south-easterly winds are offshore and usually blow in the mornings, before sea breezes from the south or south-west build later in the day, especially in summer. The reef is shallow in places, and on big days the waves become powerful, with strong currents, so it suits intermediate and advanced surfers. The line-up is popular with local surfers, and respect and patience help. The water is about 18 °C in winter and 20 to 21 °C in late summer, so a 3/2 wetsuit is usual, with a spring suit in the warmest months.
